Congrats, you’re on the list!

You’re in good company here with 2,862 other folks who’ve signed up for my weekly newsletter, which focuses on Seattle sports, self discovery and my writerly ambitions though not necessarily in that order.

First, a little housekeeping: My welcome email is en route to your inbox, and that’s important so if you don’t see it, check your “Promotions” or “Updates” folder.

Here’s what you’ll get from me going forward: A weekly email I write to stay in touch with the people who’ve connected with my words over the years whether I was writing for a newspaper or talking on the radio. I will be sharing work such as my personal essays in Seattle Magazine, and also offering my thoughts and opinions on things that remain very much of interest to me such as the Seattle Seahawks, the Washington Huskies and my undying hatred of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

About me

I’ve been a sports journalist for almost 30 years now, meaning I’m old enough to have covered a team that no longer exists (the Seattle SuperSonics) for a newspaper that no longer publishes (the Seattle Post-Intelligencer). I’ve worked at ESPN.com, The Seattle Times and more recently I spent nine years as a radio host at 710 ESPN Seattle.

I left that job in 2021 to focus on non-fiction writing, and over the past two years I’ve increasingly veered outside of sports. Currently, I am a contributing writer at Seattle Magazine where I have a column called “Clarity,” and I’m in the process of writing a book about how I let go of a life-defining grudge against my stepfather.

I currently live in New York with my wife, Sharon Pian Chan, and our 6-year-old Shar-Pei Simba. But while I may have left Seattle, I can’t seem to quit Seattle sports, either. I’m the co-host of the “Say Who, Say Pod” about Washington football and a weekly guest on Mitch Levy’s podcast, “Mitch Unfiltered.”

About the audience

Most subscribers know me from my work as a radio host in Seattle. Some go back to my time writing for The Seattle Times. Then there’s the few souls who remember as the undersized but sports-obsessed fellow who grew up in Oregon and measured at 4 feet 11 and one-half inches at the end of ninth grade. A couple of the folks who subscribe are actually related to me. Everyone is encouraged to tease me here given that we’re friends.

In closing …

Thank you for being here. There are a lot of ways you could spend your time and your energy, and I’m incredibly grateful that you’re interested in reading what I have to say. I will do my best to make that investment worthwhile, and if I am falling short in that regard, I always welcome feedback. My email is danny at dannyoneil.com. I’ve already got your email, and there should be something from me in your inbox right now. If it’s not there, remember, check your “Promotions” or “Updates” folder.
