My first job out of college required me to conduct weekly phone interviews, which I would record, transcribe and then fashion into a story that would be published under the name of the person I’d interviewed.

This is how I got to know Kirk Herbstreit and Joe Theismann.

They were the names. I was the ESPN.com production assistant who turned their words into stories that would be published as weekly columns on the Web site from 1997 to 1999.

At the time, I couldn’t wait until my career progressed and I could focus on my words. Twenty-five years later, I have an understanding and deep appreciation for the importance and the value of ghostwriting.

It is a tool. One that allows high-impact leaders to tell their stories in ways that connect and move the audience.

Ghostwriting isn’t a secret. At least it shouldn’t be.

Most people know that Prince Harry’s memoir “Spare” was not, in fact, written by Prince Harry. The book detailed his experiences, in many cases using his words, but he was not the one who structured the story.

That was his ghostwriter. Someone who spent his professional life writing stories.

But ghostwriting isn’t just for erstwhile royals. It is for the entrepreneur who is bringing a new product to market. It is for the veteran executive who has game-changing insights on motivation and organization.

It is for the person who has something they want to say, but feel they’re shouting into the void with every social-media post they make.

Can you learn how to do it right?

Absolutely.

I’ll even help with my newsletter about the best tactics, techniques and methods for connecting with audiences across a variety of platforms and formats.

If you’re looking for high-end, white-glove ghostwriting, someone who’ll take your ideas and ambition and turn it into content that engages an audience at scale, I’m ready to talk about that, too.

Words are becoming cheaper than ever, which is why knowing the right ones to use is so valuable.
